NEW MOON BIRTH = NEW MONTH ?

NEW MOON BIRTH = NEW MONTH ? Since old history people, all over earth, knew seasons by sun movements and months by moon  movements.  It was up there for all to observe and see.   Reflect on what God says, "He is who made the sun lightning and the moon a light, and determined it by phases, so that you know the number of years and accounting" ( هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاء  وَالْقَمَرَ  نُوراً وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُواْ عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ مَا خَلَقَ اللّهُ ذَلِكَ إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ يُفَصِّلُ الآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ).  Indeed,  Astronomy science since old civilizations, was progressing with calculation of the sun and moon movements, however such specialized learning was scattered in few cities, not commonly available.  In early times of Islam, given that most Arabs were illiterate -- the commonly used method of determining month cycles, was simply by sighting the moon.  You find this is the common religious practice (sunnah) since the earli

The only scholarly way to find the facts is to examine

Notes on the Hadith and Sunnah: Obligation to verify authenticity

27th April 1995 Notes on the Hadith and Sunnah: Obligation to verify authenticity [1] Allah Most High says in the Qur’an (surat al-a`raf 7:33):  Say: My Lord has only forbidden indecencies, the inward and the outward, and sin, and wrongful oppression, and that you associate with Allah that for which He sent down never authority, and that you say concerning Allah that which you know not.  Allah Most High says in the Qur’an (surat al-isra’ 17:36):  And follow not that whereof you have no knowledge. Surely, the hearing, the sight, the heart–all of those shall be questioned of.  Allah Most High says in the Qur’an (surat al-talaq 65:2):  Then, when they have reached their term, retain them in kindness or part from them in kindness, and call to witness two men of uprightness [2]among yourselves, and keep your testimony upright for Allah. . .  Allah Most High says in the Qur’an (surat al-hujurat 49:6): O you who believe! If an unrighteous [3] bring you tidings, verify it, lest yo

It was among the duties of all messengers to make the message clear The Qur'an 14:4, {And We have never sent a messenger except with the tongue of his people that he might make clear to them.} 2. Allah Most High taught His Messenger and explained the Qur'an to him The Qur'an 75:16-19, {Move not your tounge with it to hasten it.  Surely it is upon Us to gather it and to recite it.  So, when We recite it, follow its recitation.  Then surely it is upon Us to make it clear.} The Qur'an 4:113, {And He has sent down upon you the Book and the wisdom, and has taught you what you did not know b

Guidance v. understanding v. implementation

God's book (Quran) is timeless guidance to all humans. His Messenger's implementation (Sunnah) on the ground is best example. Our understandings are human efforts subject to being right or wrong.

Lane's Arabic - English Lexicon -- online & pdf download

Salam, While checking some online resources, I came to see that Lane's Arabic - English Lexicon is available online and can be downloaded as pdf (image) files.  Anyone who dealt with scholarly translation of Arabic into English knows this master work as the ultimate Arabic-English dictionary.   It is so meticulous and comprehensive; it is to Arabic-English, as the (unabridged) Oxford English Dictionary is to English. Edward William Lane (1801-1876) was an English man who studied Arabic and Islam and lived long time in Egypt.  He spent almost the last 30 years of his life working on his massive dictionary.  It is mainly based on the largest Arabic dictionaries, Lis a n al-`Arab and T a j al-`Ar u s.  I find it amazing that he worked this in the 19th century when such huge Arabic dictionaries were still in hand-written manuscripts.  To have an idea how massive undertaking this was; Lisan al-`Arab is about 15 printed volumes while Taj al-`Arus is 20.  Lane's Lexicon was pub
